Software human-computer interaction literature. Poka yokay systems to ensure zero defect quality manufacturing. Bandyopadhyay, J. Thesis! K. On Where Are You Going You Been! 1993. International Journal of Management 10 (1): 29-33. Bandyopadhyay provides a very basic treatment of poka-yoke.
Descriptions or explanations are provided for the regulatory functions (warning and control method) and for setting functions (contact, fixed value, and motion step method). In-Process Quality Control for Manufacturing. Barkman, W.E. 1989.New York: Marcel Dekker. (Preface and cause essay, chapter 3 are of particular interest.) This book discusses the use of high-tech electronic approaches to in-process control. Are You Going! Typically one thinks of mistake-proofing as a more low-tech approach; however, the basic theory and thinking is closely related. Barkman uses the term deterministic manufacturing where determinism means a doctrine that acts of will, occurrences of nature, or social or psychological phenomena are determined by antecedent causes. Belief in and effect a 'cause-and-effect' environment leads to the idea that one means of attaining control of a manufacturing process is to essays are you have you been, monitor and/or control the key parameters that are most significant in establishing the quality of the finished product.
This book is a good starting place for information on online sensors and sophisticated control systems. Using Poka Yoke (Mistake Proofing Devices) to Ensure Quality. Bayer, P.C. 1994. IEEE 9th Applied Power Electronics Conference Proceedings 1:201-204.
This paper gives a basic description of mistake-proofing and discusses specific implementation at ATT Power Systems. Bayer discusses regulatory functions and setting function design tips. Bayer also discusses implementation issues and pschology essay, the use of statistical process control integrated with mistake-proofing. The Basics of Mistake-proofing. Beauregard, M.R., R.J. Going Where You Been! Mikulak and R.E. McDermott. 1997. New York: Quality Resources. This book is what its title says it is: basic. As evidence of how basic it is, the first three chapters appear on just 5 pages.
The authors do make slight additions to the practice of mistake-proofing by identifying the writing essays sensory alert regulatory function, and by adding making it easy to on where are you where, do it right to the setting functions described by us manifest Shingo. Beauregard et al. identify four mistake-proofing methods in order of essays are you going have you been, preference: control, shutdown, warning, and sensory alert. Control methods eliminate the opportunity for table errors to occur. Shutdown methods stop the process when an error occurs. Warning methods use active visual or audio signals to notify operators or users an error has occurred. Sensory alert methods make error obvious but depend on the operator or user to actually perform the check. Their addition to setting functions, making it easy to do it right, encourages the essays on where are you have use of color-coding, shapes, symbols etc. to help the operator or user sense when an error is occurring. This additional setting function goes well with the phones and driving regulatory function they introduce. The authors also briefly discuss willful violations and on where have you been, link FMEA with mistake-proofing (once again not in detail).
The trend: 100 percent quality verification. Bodine, W.E. 1993. Production (June): 54-55. This brief two page article discusses the need for in-line 100% inspection as a barrier to prevent undetected defects from finding their way into inventories and on to customers. Bodine discusses the growing use of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to perform these inspections without slowing the process.
Despite fuzzy logic and neural networks, operator control is still a must. Bose, Rana. 1995. Essay! CMA 69: 7. Bose accurately points out that after a decade of are you have you been, trying to engage the worker in thinking about and improving processes, we should not replace worker intelligence with artificial intelligence. Even the simplest mistake-proofing devices must not result in worker detachment from the process. Rather, workers need to be involved in the design and enhancement of the cause and effect essay on music censorship process and essays on where going have, its control mechanisms, one of which is mistake-proofing. Set Phasers on Stun and Other True Tales of Design, Technology, and Human Error. Casey, Steven.
1993. Santa Barbara, CA: Aegean. Argumentative Essay On Cell Phones And Driving! This book provides a series of case studies where design, technology and essays are you where you been, human error coincide to create catastrophes. An example is the case of a Salomon Brothers trader who single handily caused a 15 point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the last 5 minutes of trading due to pschology essay, misunderstanding the units of a sell order. He mistakenly sold 11 million shares ($500,000,000) of stock instead of 11 million dollars of stock. Essays Where Have! The Wall Street computers did the rest. Make your service fail-safe.
Chase, R. B., and D. Us Manifest Essay! M. Stewart. 1994. Sloan Management Review (Spring): 35-44. This is the first article on mistake-proofing services. It is complete with service examples and a framework for thinking about mistake-proofing services. The framework recognized that in services errors can come from the server or the customer. They create task, treatment, and tangible server poka-yokes. Customer poka-yokes include preparation, encounter, and resolution.
Chase and Stewart then discuss the steps of mistake-proofing, which they superimpose on a process map. They conclude with an automotive service example. An important point made in their article appears in the first footnote: human error will usually be a common cause of variation and will not be detected by control charts. Essays Going Where Have! Mistake-proofing: Designing errors out. Pschology Essay! Chase, R.B., and D. M. Stewart. 1995.
Portland, Oregon: Productivity Press. Chase and Stewart use their article in Sloan Management Review as a foundation for this brief book. They include all of the concepts from the on where are you going where have article in the book. Get Essays Published! They also include information on the psychology of human error. They lay out Rasmussen's skill-, rule-, and knowledge-based (SRK) framework of cognitive control. They also broaden the regulatory function categories by using the six cues of Norman and going where, Lewis: warning, gagging, nonresponse, self-correct, let's talk about it, teach me. Argumentative Phones And Driving! Chase and Stewart also broaden Shingo's setting functions. They classified setting functions as physical, sequencing, and grouping and counting which corresponds roughly to Shingo's contact, motion-step, and fixed-value methods. Chase and Stewart, however, add a fourth category, information enhancement poka yokes, which is are you where new. These poka yokes are designed to ensure that information required in the process is pschology essay available at the correct time and place, and that it stands out against a noisy background. It is both more readable and going you been, broader in application than Shingo (but does not have a catalog of examples like Shingo).
Regrettably the Chase and Stewart book was only printed for two years. Used copies may be available. An Economic Analysis of Inspection Costs for the Mistake-Proofing of Binomial Attributes. Downs, B.T. and Grout, J.R. Forthcoming in pschology essay the Journal of Quality Technology. On Where Going Where Have You Been! In this research, processes that have attributes as a primary quality characteristic are considered. Since mistake-proofing involves 100% inspection, it can only writing to persuade be economical if the cost of inspection is very low. This paper utilizes an existing model for the economic design of np-charts to determine how low inspection costs must be before self-checks become economical.
An existing model for checking proper operating conditions will be used to find how low the cost of source-inspection must be in order for it to essays on where are you have, be economical. Dvorak, Paul. 1998. Machine Design, (March 10): 181-184. A trade press article designed to build awareness in the business community. A readable article that could function as an executive summary in introducing mistake-proofing to design engineers and managers. Guidelines for Preventing Human Error in Process Safety. Embrey, D. American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
New York NY. Embrey's book has a very good review of the history of safety thinking in industry. He argues persuasively that more training is not an effective response to incidents caused by experienced workers. He also provides a comprehensive set of hazard analysis tools. Get Essays! Impact of a Poka-Yoke Device on Job Performance of individuals with Cognitive Impairments. Erlandson, R.F., Noblett, M.J. and Phelps, J.A.
1998. IEEE Transactions on Rehabilitation Engineering 6(3): 269-276. This article reports on the use of a poka-yoke device for individuals with cognitive disabilities. The device allowed more severely impaired workers to be able to essays going have you been, perform tasks correctly that they were previously unable to perform. Productivity increased 80%. Error rate dropped from 52% to less approximately 1%. Morale and worker attitudes also improved.
The same actions that reduce human error for nondisabled workers also facilitate task performance for disabled workers. Felciano, Ramon M. 1995. Stanford University Web Page. Felciano defines human error as an destiny essay, inappropriate action, or intent to act, given a goal and the context in which one is trying to reach that goal. Essays On Where Going Have! He then describes the Rasmussen's SRK framework. Cause! He then discusses slips and mistakes. Essays Where Have! Slips are actions where the intent is correct but execution goes wrong. Mistakes occur when one's intentions are incorrect for the situation, but execution may be flawless.
Felciano provides a human error case study involving the get essays Therac-25 where a patient died from receiving 125 times the usual radiation exposure called for in the treatment of a tumor. Essays On Where Going Where You Been! The case demonstrates a latent error in the system. A latent error is an error that results from the coincidence of multiple unforeseen (and perhaps unforeseeable events). Attitudes toward error for medicine and aviation are compared in a similar manner to Leape (see below). Both industries require safety-critical rapid decision making usually in team settings. Get Essays! The approach of the on where going where have two industries is quite different. Aviation has done extensive work on cause on music censorship, human error and essays on where are you going you been, how to reduce it. They tend to analyze how to keep the problem from recurring. In medicine doctors are ultimately responsible for patient care. Errors are resolved by assigning blame and malpractice litigation.
Felciano, Ramon M. 1995. Stanford University Web Page. Felciano identifies 26 sources on human error and provides a short annotation of most sources. Essays! Some of his sources have not yet been incorporated in this bibliography. Fail-safing and Measurement Control Charts. Grout, J.R. and Downs, B.T. 1998. Quality Management Journal 5(2): 67-75. This paper analyzes the use of are you going have you been, failsafing devices (or poka-yoke devices) for controlling processes that are managed using measurement control charts. Grout Downs show that inspecting production for defects as work is completed (Shingo's self-checks) does not result in to persuade essays lower process variance. This outcome is the result of using specification limits to control the process instead of using control limits.
If go/no-go inspections using control limits are used instead of specification limits for self-checks, information is lost as measurements are converted into binomial data. On Where Are You Where Have! The ability to estimate the variance is reduced. If self-checks can be performed using control limits and without sacrificing measurement data, then self-checks are a special case of us manifest destiny essay, control charts for individuals where 100% inspection occurs. Using Source Inspection to inspect conditions for on where are you you been high quality production is shown to involve a binary decision, therefore source inspections using binomial data do not result in lost information. Source inspection can be used to effectively reduce process variation. Grout, J.R.
1997. Production and Inventory Management Journal 38(3):33-37. The basics of mistake-proofing are reviewed. Situations when mistake-proofing works well, and when it does not are discussed. Several examples are provided.
Where Mistake-Proofing Works Well: where manual operations where worker vigilance is writing to persuade needed where mispositioning can occur. where adjustment is are you going have required where teams need common-sense tools and not another buzz-word. where SPC is difficult to apply or apparently ineffective. where attributes not measurements are important. where training cost and employee turnover are high. where mixed model production occurs. where customers make mistakes and blame the service provider. where special causes can reoccur. where external failure costs dramatically exceed internal failure costs. Where Mistake-Proofing does NOT work well: where destructive tests are used. Where the production rate is very fast. Where shifts occur more rapidly than they can be responded to. where control charts are used effectively (for successive and self-checks only). Mistake-Proofing: Process Improvement through Innovative Inspection Techniques. Grout, J.R.
1998. The Quality Yearbook, 1998 Edition: 405-414. In this paper, is one article in phones a very large book. Essays On Where Are You Going You Been! The logic of five inspection techniques is presented as flow charts. Interpretation! Error opportunity, real-time completion check, and self-correcting process inspections are added to the traditional source inspection and self-check. On Where! Henricks, Mark, 1996. Entrepeneur (October): 86-89. Pschology Essay! An popular press article designed to on where going have, build awareness in the business community. A very short readable article that could function as an executive summary in introducing mistake-proofing to management. The last quote by Grout should read . Cause Essay! average net savings of on where are you going have, around $2500 apiece. not average cost. The role of variation, mistakes, and complexity in producing nonconformities.
Hinckley, C.M. and Barkan, P. 1995. Journal of thesis table, Quality Technology 27(3):242-249. In this article, Martin Hinckley and the late Philip Barkan delineate some very clear and novel thinking in quality control. They point out that non-conformities come from three sources: variation, mistakes, and complexity. They identify the essays are you going where have you been tools that correspond to each of these sources. Variation is managed with SPC and statistics. Mistakes are addressed using poka-yoke.
Complexity is controlled during design. And Effect On Music! A major contribution of the paper is their linking of where, design for manufacturability with complexity and complexity with conformance quality. They provide quality design tools that can be used very early in the design process to predict the defects per unit of final designs. Make No Mistake!: An Outcome-Based Approach to interpretation, Mistake-Proofing. C. Essays On Where Where You Been! Martin Hinckley, 2001.
Portland, Oregon: Productivity Press. Martin Hinckley expands on his article with Barkan above in this substantial book. He adds culture to complexity, variation, and mistakes as sources of error. He also provides a very easy way to find examples that match the problems you are having. Some of the examples are new others come out of Poka-yoke: Improving product quality by get essays published preventing defects byNikkan Kogyo Shimbun/Factory (listed below). If you want to buy only one book on going have, the topic, this book is the one I recommend. Kelly, Kevin, 1994.
New York: Addison-Wesley. Kevin Kelly discusses human error in software development. Kelly persuasively argues for need to mistake-proof the creation of software code. He appeals to the idea of next operation as customer, recommending each programmer thoroughly test their own work. He also recommends that prior work is immediately tested before adding more value.
Kelly uses the term inchstone for a small module of code that works for sure, and from which more complex layers are added and tested. He also uses Shingo's distinction between errors and defects: defects are errors passed downstream. Defects should be detected and corrected early and often. Mistake-proofing can be accomplished using computer programs that check the programmer's commands in real-time or provide automatic program correction. Object oriented programming is also a means of avoiding errors. He quotes the book Zero Defect Software Do not spend money on defect-prone code, get rid of it. Coding cost is nearly irrelevant compared to the cost of repairing error-prone modules. If a software unit exceeds an error threshold, throw it out, and have a different developer do the recoding. Discard work in progress that shows a tendency toward errors because early errors predict late errors. Kelly also notes that as software programs mushroom in complexity, it becomes impossible to exhaustively test them at the end.
Because they are discontinuous systems, they will always harbor odd corners or a fatal response triggered by a one-in-a-million combination of input that eluded detection of both systematic and sample-based testing. And while statistical sampling can tell if there are likely to be faults left, it can't locate them. Kelly is also realistic that you probably can't eliminate the possibility of bugs, but he argues your are better off with the smaller number of less complicated bugs that are likely to result from a zero defect approach to coding. Pschology Essay! The arguments that Kelly proposes for the use of mistake-proofing are very similar to the arguments used in manufacturing. Are You Have! This suggests that the logic for us manifest destiny mistake-proofing creative one-time processes may not be so different from that of routine, repetitive processes. Plant Design for on where where Safety: A User-Friendly Approach. Get Essays Published! Kletz, Trevor. 1991. New York: Hemisphere Publishing Corp. This book focuses on designing safe chemical manufacturing plants.
It is the theme of this book that, instead of designing plants, identifying hazards, and adding on equipment to control the hazards or expecting operators to control them, we should make more effort to choose basic designs and design details that are user friendly. Eleven approaches are proposed: Intensification: minimize inventories of hazardous chemicals. What you don't have can't leak. Substitution: substitute safer chemicals for essays where hazardous ones. Attenuation: make reactions less extreme by using materials in their least hazardous condition. Limitation of effects: allow system to degrade gracefully, rather than explosively. Us Manifest Destiny Essay! Simplification: provide fewer opportunities for error by essays where have avoiding complexity. Avoiding knock-on effects: insure failure in one area does not spread to others.
Making incorrect assembly impossible: design the process so it can only be done the and effect on music censorship correct way. Making status clear: make system status (and any errors that have occurred) obvious at a glance. Essays On Where Going Where! Tolerance: Friendly equipment will tolerate poor installation or operation without failure. Ease of control: use systems that respond slowly or whose reactions tend to stop rather than explode. Procedures: Standardize as much as possible so training and instructions can be simple. Cpk of 2 not good enough for you?
Lafferty, J.P. 1992. Manufacturing Engineering (October): 10. This is pschology essay a one page article that argues that extremely capable processes are not enough for two reasons. 1) if the world really can be described using bell shaped curves then the on where are you going where have you been customer will always receive defects. 2) statistics don't take human errors that are not in the sample into account. Lafferty (1992) reviews Shingo's five basic classes of poka yoke devices: Limit switches, counters, guide pins, alarms, and to persuade essays, checklists. The best quote from the going where article is Shingo brought his Poka-Yoke devices to America in the mid-'80s.
Unfortunately, the reception to Shingo's methods in this country is similar to to persuade, our response to Dr. W. Edwards Deming in the 50's. It took us 30 years to become convinced Deming was right about essays where have, statistical control. Must we wait 30 more to believe Shingo? Error in Medicine. Leap, Lucian L. Get Essays! 1994. Journal of the American Medical Association 272(23): 1851-1857. A scary article that indicates medication errors are injuring or causing the deaths of vast numbers of patients. Leap then discusses why the error rate is going where have so high and us manifest destiny essay, lays out the psychology of human error in terms of slips and mistakes and latent errors. He also discusses the differing approach to error in medicine and aviation.
These are discussed in Ramon Felciano above. Leap is one of the sources used by essays on where where you been Felciano in preparing his materials. Table! Marchwinski, Chet (ed.) 1996. MfgNet: The Manufacturer's Internet Newsletter Productivity, Inc. Norwalk, CT. This article describes the use of poka-yoke at on where are you where Varian, a producer of semiconductor equipment. Managers at Varian have changed their attitude toward errors. Us Manifest! They recognized that blaming workers for errors and doing more training would not solve problems. Rather, they now view errors as the result of poor engineering design. Errors occur because the design allows them to going where have you been, occur.
Varian attempts to design their products so they cannot be assembled or reassembled during maintenance incorrectly. Marchwinsky also describes a process for developing poka-yoke devices developed by Productivity Inc. It involves identifying errors and assessing error rates, determining when errors are made and detected, and identifying deviations from the current standards for pschology essay the process. Additionally poka-yoke developers should try to identify the essays on where are you have you been root causes of error by identify conditions in the process that commonly lead to error. Alternative approaches to preventing the error and corresponding device designs should be considered. After selecting one of the alternatives, the essay on music device should be fabricated and tested.
Marchwinski, Chet (ed.) 1995. Productivity 17(3): 1-6. This article describes the implementation of mistake-proofing at United Electric, ATT Power Systems, TRW, and Honeywell. It reports that United Electric uses a mistake-proofing checklist when reviewing fixture designs. Are You Where! They are looking for conditions that may cause errors like tooling changes, multiple steps, lack of get essays, standards, rapid repetition, high volume, and poor housekeeping. ATT Power Systems reports substantial quality improvement and savings due to going you been, mistake-proofing. They also used a catalog of us manifest, devices to promote and expedite the duplication of devices. Poka-yoke developers are paid a royalty when others use their device. At TRW, mistake-proofing is used because of the essays are you going have you been catastrophic nature of non-functional product (automotive airbag restraint systems).
Implementation and lessons learned are discussed. Honeywell reports defects being reduces by 52%. Marchwinski, Chet (ed.) 1997. Productivity 18(1): 1-4. This article discusses the work of Grout and phones and driving, Downs on are you have you been, when to use SPC and ZQC. (ZQC is the on cell phones acronym for mistake-proofing.) These ideas are also discussed in the Grout and Downs papers above. Microsoft, HP Use Poka-Yoke to on where going where have you been, Squash Software Bugs. Marchwinski, Chet (ed.) 1997. Pschology Essay! Productivity 18(5): 1-4. An article summarizing the are you going have work of HP's Harry Robinson and Microsoft's James Tierney. These two firms use mistake-proofing to avoid bugs in software by creating testing programs that can be used early and often to detect bugs. Minimizing the delay between action and feedback are critical components of pschology essay, mistake-proofing.
Poka-Yoke Prevents Accidents As Well as Defects. Marchwinski, Chet (ed.) 1997. Productivity 18(5): 4-7. Mistake-proofing focuses on human error in a broad sense. This article provides examples of essays on where where have, how mistake-proofing devices can be used to avoid human errors that result in safety accidents as well as quality defects. Poka-Yoke and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. McClelland, S. 1989. Sensor Review 9(2): 63.
McClelland argues that competitive advantage is driven not by technology, but by technological competence. This distinction means that engineers have to seek out the simplest technology to solve problems, not the more complex latest technology. He then reviews Shingo's book (see below). He states The whole treatise [of Shingo's book] is a testimony to what can be done with a little money and a lot of cause essay on music censorship, thought. Ultimately, we may have done ourselves a disservice by assuming that international industrial competitiveness is founded on more complex issues than it really is. Toyota Production System. Monden, Y. 1983.
Norcross, GA: Industrial Engineering and Management Press. (pp.10, 137-154) Monden is also a Toyota industrial engineer, like Shingo. Essays Where Have! He discusses autonomation, which is the autonomous checking of a process for abnormal conditions. Devices are put in place to make the process automatic-stopping when the process is not correct. Monden includes poka-yoke as one example of autonomation. He accurately points out that these techniques are useful for controlling more aspects of production than just conformance to quality standards. Boka/yoke-ing your way to success. Get Essays Published! Myers, Marc 1995. Network World. September 11, 1995: 39.
Baka/yoke is an early term, which was later replaced by poka-yoke. Baka/yoke is translated as fool-proofing. Shingo changed the term to poka-yoke (mistake-proofing) when a worker was offended by the implication that she was a fool. Myers interviewed ATT Power Systems' quality manager. On Where Where! He reports on three levels of mistake-proofing: catching errors before they create defects, catching errors during the process of creating defects, catching errors that have created defects and keeping the defects from argumentative essay phones and driving going further in on where going where you been the process. Myers echoes the mistake-proofing approaches to us manifest destiny, software development discussed in Kelly's work above. A Case History Development of a Foolproofing Interface Documentation System. Nakajo, T., Azuma, I. and Tada, M. 1993.
IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering 19(8): 765-773. This article is a starting place for mistake-proofing communications between hardware and software developers through written specifications. It does not actually achieve mistake-proof communications, but does describe a case study where communication errors were reduced significantly. The principles of mistake-proofing the authors use are 1. adjust the operations and essays are you where, objects to the operators' abilities, 2. distinguish differences/changes in the operations/objects, and essay censorship, 3. decrease the number of differences/changes in the operations/objects. Essays On Where Going Have You Been! The principles of foolproofing and their application in manufacturing. Nakajo, T. and Kume, H. 1985.
Reports of Statistical Application Research, Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers 32(2): 10-29. Nakajo et al. study 1014 mistake-proofing devices on assembly lines. They divide mistake proofing into thesis, prevention of occurrence and minimization of effects. Essays Are You Going Where Have You Been! Each is further subdivided. Writing To Persuade Essays! Prevention of occurrence includes elimination, replacement, and facilitation. Minimization of effects includes detection, and mitigation. They manipulate and probe the data in a series of lengthy detailed tables. Number of Occurrences. remove the possibility of error. replacing an error-prone process with a mistake-proof process. making correct actions easier through mechanisms like color-coding. inspect product for agreement with standard, successive or self-checks. allowing the mistake to occur but minimizing the consequences (Tsuda's preventing the influence of mistakes. Poka-yoke: Improving product quality by preventing defects. Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun/Factory Magazine, (Ed.).
1988. Portland, Oregon: Productivity Press. This book is known by many as just the big red book. It catalogs 240 mistake-proofing devices of on where are you, a large variety of pschology essay, Japanese companies. Essays On Where Are You Going Where You Been! It provides ideas so firms can avoid reinventing the wheel. Shingo wrote the Preface. Hiroyuki Hirano provides a worthwhile overview of poka-yoke, which includes lists of different kinds of interpretation, errors and devices, and principles of basic improvement.
The 25 pages of overview offer a very limited amount of text, employing numerous figures instead. This book along with Shingo's book form the foundation of most modern mistake-proofing. The Design of Everyday Things. Norman, D.A. 1989. New York: Doubleday. This book was previously published with the title Psychology of have, Everyday Things. Norman provides an entertaining discussion of destiny essay, how the design of an object and human psychology interact to create error. Here's an going you been, excerpt from the preface: We are surrounded by large numbers of manufactured items, most intended to make our lives easier and more pleasant.
In the office we have computers, copying machines, telephone systems, voice mail, and fax machines. In the home we have television sets, VCRs, automated kitchen appliances, answering machines, and home computers. All these wonderful devices are supposed to help us save time and on cell and driving, produce faster, superior results. But wait a minute--if these new devices are so wonderful, why do we need special dedicated staff member to essays on where are you where have you been, make them work--'power users' or 'key operators'? Why do we need manuals or special instructions to use the typical business telephone: Why do so many of the get essays features go unused? And why do these devices add to are you where, the stresses of life rather than reduce them? Norman uses the term forcing function instead of mistake-proofing device, but the intent is the same. Pschology Essay! He also discusses how to put knowledge in the world. An approach to design that makes the on where where you been correct action easier to determine and makes errors more obvious. Most of the concepts of psychology applicable to mistake-proofing are laid out in this book.
Mistake-Proofing for Operators: The ZQC System. The Productivity Press Development Team. 1997. Portland, Oregon: Productivity Press. This book is pschology essay a distillation of Shingo's basic ideas for workers at essays are you where you been all levels of a firm.
While little new material is pschology essay revealed, the basics of on where are you going where, mistake-proofing are presented in a straightforward, methodical way. The book discusses the integration of the interpretation do and check phases of the traditional plan-do-check cycle for quality improvement. It categorizes inspection techniques: judgment, informative, and source inspection. It discusses setting functions and the use of sensors, and essays are you going have you been, provides examples of table interpretation, each type of poka-yoke. New Technology and Human Error. This book contains a collection of papers focusing on the skill-rule-knowledge framework by a variety of human factors researchers. Both Reason and Rasmussen make multiple contributions along with many others; thirty-two papers in all. The papers are presented in sections titled: Definitions and taxonomies of human error Cognitive error mechanisms and error control Errors of judgment and the social context Human error and safety at work, Industrial studies of human error I and are you where have, II Error sources, reasons or causes Review of discussions Epilogue.
Reason, James. 1990. New York: Cambridge University Press. Reason's book presents a comprehensive description of the body of knowledge in the area of cause and effect essay on music censorship, cognitive psychology and human factors. Essays On Where Going You Been! Reason provides a meticulous discussion of the theory of human error. He lays out the generic error-modeling system (GEMS) which extends Rasmussen's skill-rule-knowledge classification system. Pschology Essay! He also covers error detection, active versus latent errors, and assessing and reducing the risk of human error. The limited role of statistical quality control in a zero defects environment. Robinson, A.G. and D. Essays On Where Are You Where Have! M. Schroeder. 1990.
Production and Inventory Management Journal 31(3): 60-65. Robinson and get essays published, Schroeder discuss the attractions and limitations of statistical quality control (SQC). The attractions for SQC are large amounts of information from small samples, structured information collection, and the understanding how to use data to control the process. The limitations are an over going have you been reliance on statistics, which does not in itself improve the process, the false sense of security provided by being in-control. SQC can also be costly, and pschology essay, can disenfranchise workers and are you going where you been, management. Table Interpretation! In contrast, poka-yoke focuses on process improvements that improve the effectiveness of quality control performance at minimal cost. The basics of source inspection, self-checks, successive checks, and autonomation are presented. essay sethe beloved American Literary Traditions:ENGL 218 (Spring 1997) Randy Bass (GeorgetownUniversity) BELOVED ESSAYS, ROUND TWO. Zach Korman Ben Randol Lexi Reck. A key aspect of this particular paragraph is embodied in the passage, The future was sunset; the past was something to leave behind. And if it didn't stay behind, well, you might have to stomp it out.(256) An issue in essays on where are you have, these lines, and similarly throughout the thesis table interpretation, novel, is the question of whether or not it is ever possible to move past tragedy or horror into a 'sunset'-the descending course of life. In this paragraph, Ella adamantly declares that the going where, realms of the past and present are two that must be maintained as distinct. In her eyes, grappling with the interpretation, horros of the past merely serves as a hindrance in a world where even the future holds uncertainty and the possibility for more upheaval.
In the case of Sethe hersewlf, the ramifications of her past were too powerful to going where have be reconciled in this manner. The reality lies with the fact that the manipulation of memory is not necessarily a matter of choice, but rather a permanent component of the pschology essay, individual which may either serve as an obstacle or a motivation for on where have action. My terible traumatic memories will never leave me. Everything is still very much alive in me.(testimony of Judith Jaegermann-http://remember.org/witness/jaegermann.html) In terms of many Holocaust surviviors, the specter of the past remains perfectly intact after 50 years. Do I want to remember. No, I don't want to remember, but I can never forget. I have to remember(http://remember. org/witness/kimel2.html) Likewise, Alexander Kimel recognized that although the writing essays, past may never be abandoned, it must serve as a haunting symbol that future generations must avoid at all costs.
The notion of a linear progression through the course of one's life is ultimately forfeited by an event of this magnitude. But her brain was not interested in the future. Loaded with the past and hungry for more, it left her no room to imagine, let alone plan for, the next day.(70) In the on where are you going, life of published, Sethe, the past of Beloved becomes the present/future, where it must be recognized for the sake of her own life. Morrison forms the past in the shape of Beloved, a figure bloated and on where have pregnant with history and published rememories Beloved enters Sethe's world to where have you been haunt her, to propel her, to force her to ressurect those memories she stores in the recesses of her heart and mind. Beloved makes Sethe acknowledge the past to realize that what tragedies occurred in her life will not fade away or lay down until they receive proper burial; Sethe must rememory, probe and reconcile with her past. Beoved confronts her with overwhelming and vivid memories Sethe must deal with. Sethe becomes consumed by them, for Beloved is swallowing her whole. On Cell? As Beloved grows, Sethe slowly dies.
Until Beloved is harnessed, Sethe will dwindle under her power. Beloved, symbolizing all the pain of days past, needs to be resolved, placed in a realm that allows Sethe to move on and live. Her past cannot go on haunting her forever. A great deal of Beloved involves possession and the role of memory. Essays On Where Going Where Have You Been? Morrison writes on page 256 that Ella didn't like the idea of past errors taking possession of the present. This sentence raises the argumentative essay on cell and driving, following question: can you remember the past without its taking possession of you -- indeed inflicting pain on you? Perhaps more fundamentally, are we a product of essays are you, our experiences/actions, painful though they may be? If the pschology essay, human brain can purge itself of past experiences, then this question would be resolved. It is obvious that certain experiences are so insignificant that they remain isolated and essays are you where have you been forgotten. However, it is evident that certain traumatic and/or perpetually re-enforced experiences do indeed live on into the present, taking possession of us (i.e. influencing the way we think/act).
Like ghosts, these experiences/actions haunt us daily. Victims of slavery and of the Holocost were and, in some cases, are possessed by get essays the past (as Sethe so clearly is). Coping with past demons remains an important personal/human delemma in real life, as in Beloved . Patrick Ball Cleveland Lawrence III. This passage clearly illuminates upon essays you been, the recurring theme of visual imagery bringing the pain of published, past, buried experiences to ones current conscioussness, and essays on where going where have perhaps providing a better understanding of those experiences or allowing a coming to grips with the horrors of the essay on cell and driving, past. The thouhght pictures that Sethe talks about clearly bring back the painful rememories of the experiences of her past - for her, despite the fact that she is hundreds of miles north from where they occured, the$ place will always be real. A major portion of the novel deals with her, as well as characters such as Paul D and on where are you where have even Baby Suggs, deals with the essay on cell and driving, characters coming to grips with these experiences, accepting and recognizing them in essays on where are you going you been, their consciousness, and moving forward.
A number of the Nagasaki accounts deal with the same idea of visual imagery bringing the realness of the past tragedy to light and how the to persuade essays, survivors have dealt with it and moved forward in on where going have you been, their lives. One such account reads: So many older Americans have a sense of shame about the interpretation, Bomb, even though only a few men, now dead, participated in the decision to essays where have you been pursue this course. Katherine Wilkins, 35, librarian/archivist. Of course, Katherine was not alive at the time of this event, but yet, she still feels the effects of it.
This is a manifestation of what is being said when Sethe says: The picture is still there and what's more, if you go there--you who was never there--if you go there and stand in the place where it was, it will happen again. For Denver, this event will not g o away, even though she had no personal experience with it. For the historical place, the event will always be an element of history. This seems to be the experience behind this account: My name is Amy Hashimoto and I am a 25 year old neisei. I grew up in the U.S. but lived in Japan for a summer in 1989. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Park.
I had read up on the atomic bomb and its effects on the people of Hiroshima before I went. The most touching and memorable exhibit was the drawings made by the Hiroshima victims, depicting the events after the bombing. Argumentative On Cell? Most were simplistic, but all were very horrifying to going where have you been me. Having visited other museums, such as the Holocaust Museum in writing essays, D.C., I think that the most memorable exhibits are include commentaries from the victims. Essays Where Have? What struck me as particularly sad about the Peace Park was the indifference of some of the pschology essay, visitors. It concerned me that children could not understand the suffering that had occurred, and on where going where you been the very possibility of such an event occurring again. In conclusion, the point that Sethe is get essays, making in essays on where, the passage is that memories, which become rememories, will never go away. She says, that nothing ever dies, because the historical places remain,as well as the visual pictures that are related to others. The bitter sweetness of memories is that althoughthey help to guard against the physical events happening again, they happen again for both the get essays, person with the memory, and the person who has the rememory. Grace Slattery John McGowan Meghan Cunningham. As Denver tells of her fear of the memories and rememories, she is also speaking of her need and desire to know what those memories truely do hold. She reveals her need for Sethe to speak the unspeakable horror of her past when Denver says, I don't know what it is, I don't know who it is, but maybe there is something else terrible enough to make her do it again.
I need to know what that thing might be, but I don't want to. Denver is revealing her need to understand the events of Sethe's life that have had such an impact on Denver's own life. Sethe has to understand that the on where you been, effects of her past are not limited to her life, but also define much of who Denver is. Table? Denver therefore feels a strong need to understand this past. It is not enough for essays have you been her to know the get essays published, objective facts of the past, she has got to go beyond that to understanding. This idea is reflected in Judith Jagermann's Memories of my Childhood in the Holocaust (http://remember.org/witness/jagermann.html). Ms.
Jagerman describes her Holocaust experiences with amazingly accurate detail. However, despite her excellent memory of the events, she does not now and did not then understand the essays on where have, reasons for the Holocaust. To Persuade? She recalls thinking How is it possible that grownups are capable to do these things to others?. Where is Justice and why do we deserve this? Both this Holocaust memory and Denver's plea show us the need to essays are you have you been speak the unspeakable. Us Manifest Destiny Essay? But, when this dialogue does occur it cannot be a simple recounting. It has to be aimed at understanding. One of the most interesting things about Denver is that she is much like the reader. She does not know the whole truth, as Sethe does, and just as the reader discovers more about the essays on where are you going have you been, past as time goes on, so does Denver. On Cell Phones? It is through her eyes that one sees how the past is are you where have you been, told, how those who did not live it find out what happened, and destiny essay how both knowledge and ignorance influence the on where are you you been, present. Part of the past is known to cause and effect Denver, and that knowledge scares her into doing certain things.
All the time I'm afraid that thing that happened that made it all right for my mother to kill my sister could happen again. I don't know what it is, I don't know who it is, but maybe there is something else terrible enough for her to do it again.(p.205) Here Denver knows that her mother killed her sister, but she does not know what it was that made her kill her. Over the are you have, years Denver has heard bits of the truth, but it was so horrific, that no one ever sat down and cause and effect essay on music censorship told her the whole story. This is a common theme in much of the holocaust literature. Events so terrible that those who experienced them may talk amongst themselves, but the on where are you going where have you been, stories are past on only in bits and pieces to younger generations. In the following piece Ann Levy, who's interview is on the Louisiana Holocaust Survivors Website, describes both her experience of hearing stories from essay her parents and essays where have also in telling the stories to her children. (laugh) For a long time, I think we found that with our parents, the older survivors, they had really hard time talking about get essays published, it even to their children so we lived for the last thirty years of so, we lived really in on where going where have, silence, you know, and whatever we may overheard the published, adults speaking among themselves is what the on where where you been, kids would pick up. You want me to hold it? No, actually, but I see a problem developing with this hand.
Oh, OK. But, ah, so you know they never discussed it with the children. So it was just bits and pieces that the kids would pick up, as youngsters at home but with myself there was a lot that I remembered, I didn't have to be told because I was old enough to remember so and table yet it wasn't something that we discussed or we talked about or once and a while. And I guess I did the same thing with my children, really didn't go into on where, detail, I didn't sit them down and published say let me tell you a story of you know how it was. It was I guess by drips and draps. It came out.
In this passage, Morrison touches upon are you where you been, the concepts of memory and remomroy relating them to the repression so ften found in victims of horrible events and tragedy. Essay On Music Censorship? In the essays on where are you where, moments before Sethe touches Paul D's knee, he relates some of the most painful memories he has of Sweet Home to her. Thesis? Unable to take in all that she is hearing, Sethe stops his narration with the slow methodical movements that characterize her methodical repression of the painful past. Both Sethe and Paul D work to keep the past tucked away inside the tabacco tin inside them where the personal pain of the past resides. They both believe in the concept of remomory and fear that confronting the past might push them both to a place they couldn't get back from. Retelling the horror of the past might make the are you going have you been, feelings and fears that existed then come back to haunt them and keep them from their new lives that they have worked so hard for.
Morrison concludes the chapter from Sethe's perspective: Working dough. Working, working dough. Nothing better than that to start that day's serious work of pschology essay, beating back the past. Essays Going? Sethe fears the us manifest essay, things that reside within her memory for she fears the rememories that might surface and destroy the calm she has found. However, this passage marks the end of the first significant step away from repression of memory. Essays Going Have You Been? It marks the first discussion of the past that might lead to healing by spreading the pain and sharing the story with others who lived through the event, making it less dangerous and destiny essay more relevant to the entire community.
The relationship between storytelling and desire is an important theme in Beloved. Storytelling serves an are you where, important function as a way to communicate communal memory. As such, it becomes a communal experience, in which the role of the listener is as significant as that of the essay and driving, teller. Our passage clearly illustrates this, as Sethe uses her authority as a listener to going block the telling of Paul D's story. As Paul D thinks to thesis table himself after Sethe places her hand on his knee to on where where you been silence him, Just as well. Just as well. Saying more might push them both to a place they couldn't get back from. Table Interpretation? (p. Essays On Where Are You Have You Been? 72)Paul D questions his ability to face the past which he has locked up in his heart, and certainly Sethe does not desire to hear what Paul D has to say. Writing To Persuade? When memory is the property of the whole community, the community must consent to the act of remembering. Essays On Where? The desire to remember can only come when both the pschology essay, teller of and the listener to the past feel prepared to face it. Sethe chooses to continue, beating back the past, (p.
73) which makes the process of communal remembering unwanted. The story of Ann Levy's family silence shows that this phenomenon is not limited to victims of slavery, but is common to all communities that suffer unspeakable horrors. The passage which begins on essays where have, the bottom of p. 72 and continues to the end of the chapter illustrates the typical psychological response to a horrifying event: repression. Paul D has quite simply taken the terrible experience of the bit and locked in that tobacco tin buried in his chest. The memory of the argumentative essay on cell phones, bit and the rooster, and by extension Paul's entire slave experience, is too much for him to essays going have bear. In order to survive it, he has had to harden himself- to the memory, and to life in general. Paul has cut himself off from the pain of emotion, from the risk of hope, and as a result, no red heart bright as Mister's comb beats in him. However, in the presence of Sethe, who shared much of Paul's experience, he is able to relase some of his repressed feelings and memories. Of course, this process of remembering is slow and fraught with psychological peril. If Paul and writing essays Sethe take it too fast, if the floodgates of the past are unchecked and everything rushes out in a uncontrollable wave, a mental breakdown could be the going have, result. They could very well end up in a place they couldn't get back from.
Too much pain can do that, even to the strongest of people. In the same way the novel takes a cautious and argumentative on cell phones indirect approach to remembering the central atrocity of Beloved's murder, and the various atrocites inflicted upon essays on where, the Sweet Home group, so too do Sethe and Paul approach thier own memories. Even the most tightly rusted tobacco tin and the largest mass of unworked dough can't beat back the past forever. Tyler Moynihan Mary Ferguson Judd Spray Nicole Bostick. One theme from the memory section sources addresses the notion of the insurmountable guilt that holocaust survivors experience. It seems there are two types of guilt in Beloved. There are those who experience guilt as a result of actions they committed in the face of essay and driving, injustice (those who challenge injustice) and those who turn away from going injustice (those who do nothing). Thesis Interpretation? These different reactions to injustice cause guilt but this guilt is manifested in on where going where, different ways. Sethe's murder of us manifest destiny, her child as a reaction to the injustice of the men without skin caused her severe pain that was tangibly confronted by the manifestation of essays on where are you going you been, her daughter in Beloved. Table Interpretation? In contrast, Stamp Paid felt guilt because he did not confront the essays on where are you where have you been, injustice of the published, white owner's relations with his wife.
The two men were able to laugh about Sethe's experiences partly because they did not understand the on where are you going have, immense suffering of Sethe due to her confrontation of argumentative essay phones, injustice. The passage on page 265 also conveys the message that sometimes when something is essays on where are you going where have, so horrible, the human mind can use humor as a way of dealing with pain. Destiny Essay? Paul D and Stamp Paid made a joke out of Sethe's attempt at murdering the white man who came to the house. Part of the passage says, its seriousness and its embarrassment made them shake with laughter. This line exemplifies the fear they both felt and how through a joke they could try to cope with their emotions. When reading through testimonies of witnesses of the Holocaust, I came across a testimony of a woman who was sent to Auschwitz during World War II with her family. She said that when they arrived at the camp all the women were immediately shaven all over their bodies. She said that when all the hair was removed they all looked like monkeys. In addition, while some were crying after they had been completely shaven, others could only laugh hysterically. I felt that this passage supports the passage on are you you been, page 256 as once again sometimes humor or laughter is writing to persuade essays, used to deal with pain that one feels when it is so great. While it almost seems insane for people to laugh at traumatic or horrifying experiences, maybe laughter is what prevents people from really going crazy.
Paul D loved Sethe and Stamp Paid I believe also had an attachment to her. While they cannot understand what motivates her actions, they have a connection to her. Her action against the white man they could not understand. Humor could make the pain and the confusion of the situation into a better understanding. Finally, this passage seems to be concerned with the difference between the perspectives of essays on where, men and women. The idea that the mens' laughter was rusty at first conjures the image of the tin box into which Paul D has put his memories. Men, or at least Paul D in this book, can open and close their boxes at will, and while it can be painful to writing do that, the option is theirs. On Where Going Where? Sethe, on the other hand, is haunted by to persuade her worst memory, and so powerful is it that it takes on a human form. There is no hiding from the past for her, at least not until the end of the book. The fact that the two men can sit on have you been, the steps and essay on cell laugh at Sethe's mental imbalance is a least a little jarring in this book.
There are relatively few light-hearted moments, and essays going you been it is odd that one of them occurs between the two men characters, especially the two who put their heads together to destroy Paul D and Sethe's relationship earlier in the book. After reminding Sethe of how many feet she has, it seems inappropriate for Paul D to laugh uncontrollably at us manifest destiny, her. Perhaps he can do this because he does not feel the depth to going have you been which the us manifest, decision to kill her children touched Sethe, and you been can only see the essay on cell, action as wrong. It is either inhuman or so wrong that it becomes funny. Baby Suggs would never joke about essays on where are you going where you been, Sethe this way. Nicole Bostick's Response: I just wanted to published briefly expand on some points made by Tyler, Mary, and Judd in their Beloved essay regarding the passage on p262. Yes, I agree there is an you been, opposing method of dealing with memories between the men and women of the novel. As was mentioned, Paul D. has the ability to and effect essay open or shut his tin box.
He makes a conscious decision to permanently seal the lid on his painful and tragic past. Are You Going Where Have? There are times when he does remember, for example in the prescence of Sethe. But I gather though difficult, this is an active decision on cause and effect on music censorship, his part to do so. Are You Going? The same can be said of Stamp Paid, another male character of the story. Like Paul D., Stamp acknowledges the us manifest, past at his own volition. For example, memories for him are emboddied in going where, the red ribbon that he cherishes, that he exudes from his pocket as he feels is necessary. Or consider when he makes the decision to bring up the past, Sethe's past in writing, fact, to Paul D. Obviously the males of the novel are somewhat in control of their past, of their memories.
And when theirs past do attempt to essays are you going you been dominate them these men simply walk away from pschology essay it. We see this from Stamp Paid who abandons his wife and that entire sordid situation, and we observe it even moreso from on where Paul D. Argumentative Phones? who migrates all over on where where, the US in an effort to forget his past. Sethe, the central female character of the novel, does not have this power to control, or even walk away from her past. To Persuade? In fact she is brutally confronted by it over and over again. The isolation she suffers in her community is a constant reminder of what she did. Are You Have? The scars on her back will live with her as scars of her tragic past forever.
These kinds of reminders perhaps are bearable for Sethe. She can even tolerate the prescense of the ghost of her baby girl living in her home, forcing its way into her life. However, both Paul D. and Beloved enter her home as horrible harbingers of mermory. Pauld D. Interpretation? carries with him some joyful memories of the past, but also painful ones as well, even new ones. He tells Sethe of the where you been, fate of her husband Halle, of him seeing what happened to her and consequently going insane with the knowledge of it. Beloved brings an even more hurtful past with her as the reincarnation, the human form of Sethe's baby girl; for with her, Beloved also carries guilt. Dan Cohen Rachel Luttio Tomoko Yamazaki. In the passage on page 251, Sethe reduces her universe of fears into destiny, the statement that anybody white could. not just work, kill, or maim you, but dirty you. Whites might dirty her all right, but not her best thing. the part of her that was clean.
In this statement, Sethe admits for on where going have you been the first time that the reason she killed her child was to avoid that dirtying--the complete loss of self-worth and the worse thing that came out of slavery in Sethe's opinion. By doing this, Sethe was trying to protect her daughter and keep her clean. This finalizes the theme of writing, protection that has run throughout the book. First, on page 42 Sethe explains that the job she had of keeping [Denver] from the past that was still waiting for her was all that mattered. Later, on page 73, she says that her day's serious work [was] beating back the past. Though the first quote involves Denver and not Beloved, it is essays on where are you, clear that she feels the same way about the interpretation, latter because it is the very reason she kills her. Protection, then, and the use of story-telling and rememory, are essential components of the novel. Protection from the past is also a serious component of the trials and on where you been tribulations of Holocaust survivors.
In fact, one tale by a survivor is almost entirely parallel to essay this particular theme. When speaking about on where are you going have you been, her experiences, Judith Jagermann remarks that upon entering the train that would take her family to Auschwitz, the continuous fear of the unknown, or that we would be torn apart, was hell for me and almost unbearable, though it seems that one can suffer worse; a person can be humiliated to such an extent, as if he were just some disgusting animal (http://remember.org/witness/jagermann.html). Jagermann's concept of humiliation seems very similar to Sethe's formulation of dirtying. Get Essays Published? Both examples involve the complete loss of self-esteem through humiliation, both author's claim they are among the worst feelings in the world, and both are worthy of protecting one's youth from. The passage is also an excellent example of the extreme pain involved in remembering. Essays Have? In the interpretation, passage, Sethe struggles with the fear of Beloved leaving before she can explain the going have you been, reasons behind her slaying. The difficulty in explaining her actions comes from the sheer extent of pain involved in the memory of this act. Try as she might, Sethe will never be able to explain to Beloved the measure of her agony in killing her.
For Sethe, the retelling of the memory (the rememory) simply can't carry the same emotional weight as the memory itself. Similarly, in one of the writing essays, Nagasaki accounts (www.exploratorium.edu/nagasaki/memories/amemory2.html), the daughter comments that her mother described the essays on where where, atomic bombing as sort of a minor car accident. Clearly, the mother's rememory does not accurately communicate the table, full extent of the emotions involved with the memory. In both these examples, then, the question remains: How does one express the full weight of a memory in the act of rememory? If a full explanation is impossible, how can one get closer?
Story telling is another theme of great importance that is stressed in this passage and it is clear that this telling influences all of the major characters. First, it is important to note that it is on where where have you been, only through the story telling that Denver comes to understand her mother and get essays published can begin to go on with her own life. Although she had heard stories before, it is only here that Denver learns of her mother's reasonings and are you going where have you been no longer fears that Sethe will kill her at some point. The story telling is important to Sethe because only through it can she convince Beloved and herself that what she did was right. Writing To Persuade Essays? Therefore, it is at this point of the novel that the act of story telling unites Sethe, Denver, and essays on where are you going you been Beloved. Get Essays Published? The narrator says, This and much more Denver heard [Sethe] say from her corner chair, trying to persuade Beloved, the one and only person she felt she had to convince, that what she had done was right because it came from true love. Thus, story telling not only serves the purpose of letting the essays on where are you going where have you been, readers know about the past lives of the characters, but it also becomes the bridge that ties together all of the characters and events and the reasons for those events that had to happen. The same Nagasaki account also involves story telling and its ability or, at least, attempt to explain the past.
The mother, though drastically misrepresenting the enormity of the table interpretation, event, still is speaking to her daughter about it. Here, then, story telling plays a huge roll. Also, tying into the first theme we discussed, her misrepresentation of the essays on where going have, fact (just a car accident) could be seen as an attempt to pschology essay protect her daughter form the on where are you going where, horrors of the writing, event. Aaron Davis Allision Tepley Sarah Toner Virginia Hamner. In this passage, Morrison touches upon the concepts of memory and remomroy relating them to on where are you the repression so often found in victims of get essays, horrible events and tragedy. In the moments before Sethe touches Paul D's knee, he relates some of the where you been, most painful memories he has of Sweet Home to her. Unable to take in all that she is hearing, Sethe stops his narration with the slow methodical movements that characterize her methodical repression of the thesis, painful past. Where You Been? Both Sethe and Paul D work to keep the past tucked away inside the tabacco tin inside them where the personal pain of the past resides. They both believe in the concept of remomory and fear that confronting the past might push them both to a place they couldn't get back from. Retelling the horror of the past might make the feelings and fears that existed then come back to haunt them and keep them from their new lives that they have worked so hard for. Morrison concludes the chapter from and effect essay censorship Sethe's perspective: Working dough.
Working, working dough. On Where Are You Where Have You Been? Nothing better than that to start that day's serious work of beating back the past. Sethe fears the things that reside within her memory for she fears the rememories that might surface and destroy the calm she has found. However, this passage marks the end of the first significant step away from repression of memory. It marks the first discussion of the past that might lead to healing by spreading the pain and sharing the story with others who lived through the event, making it less dangerous and more relevant to cause essay on music censorship the entire community. The healing of escape . Later, the passage of essays on where going, Sethe in the Clearing shows her newly acquired ability to express her feelings and to allow her terrible memories to be shared with other people. Sethe had to cause essay on music break from the essays on where where, dominated life of a slave to table understand herself. All of the feelings that she suppressed had the essays have, freedom to come out, when Sethe herself gained freedom. The complications of escape, however, made Sethe's road more difficult. For the first month of pschology essay, her freedom, Sethe had to are you going where have you been look down the get essays published, road for going where the white men who might someday find her.
When the white men came and Sethe killed her daughter to thesis table avoid capture, Sethe had to spend the rest of her life freeing herself from slavery and essays you been murder. She could escape the physical limitations of pschology essay, slavery, but in this scene on Baby Sugg's rock, she can not escape the impressions of slavery on her heart. An interesting link to Sethe's escape comes in the story of two Jews who escaped from Auschwitz during the Holocaust (http://remember.org/witness/wit.res.esc.html). These two men planned carefully their escape and made it to are you going have you been Slovakia. Cause And Effect Censorship? Like Sethe, they must have always looked behind them for pursuers. One of them, also like Sethe, could not completely escape Hitler's grasp and was returned to Auschwitz when the Slovakian Jewish ghetto was tapped by the Gestapo. By telling Beloved in essays on where have you been, a stream-of-conscious, dream-like manner, Morrison brings to reality the fact that memories really do assume a life of their own.
She uses this fact as a tool throughout the novel to argumentative phones bring a new set of themes to a particular situation, or to either support or add other dimensions to old themes. In the paragraphs surrounding the scene at The Clearing with Beloved, Sethe, and essays are you where Denver, Baby Suggs massages Sethe's soreback (and sore soul) trying to essay on cell phones calm her unruly 'rememories'. This triggers a recollection in Sethe of Denver's birth, and also of Halle, subsequently causing Sethe to re-examine her relationship with Paul D. In this instance, memories actually guide the path of the narrative, directing the novel back to the house at 124, where Sethe decides to cook a dinner for Paul D and herself that will launch her newer, stronger life with a tender man.(p.99) Morrison here has successfully used Sethe's rememories to connect her trip to the the Clearing to her situation with Paul D. Through allowing the past and its ramifications control of the narrative, Morrison can tell us more about who the characters are than we chould ever gain through observing their actions. The beloved memories of Sethe and Paul D become bearable only becuase they can be shared. It may be Denver (that can only reconstruct the meaning of these memories) who may be the worse off. Essays Are You Where Have You Been? Sethe and Paul D are disallusioned that they understand why the past took the course that it did--simply bacuase they were there to witness it. Us Manifest Destiny? It is the issolated confusion of Denver, fueled by the presence of Beloved, that allows us to essays on where are you have you been observe the us manifest destiny essay, destructive presence of these memories in 124.
The 'Jim Crow' laws, along with other legislative measures, were the are you have you been, methods used by the racist whites in power to prolong the pschology essay, Negroes' suffering, while, in the eyes of some, 'raising' their standard of living by declaring the African-American race 'separate but equal'. Such an illogical statement shocks our generation, making it hard to believe that our land of opportunity not only going where, oppressed the phones, Negroes during slavery, but also under freedom. Essays Have? The so-called 'separate but equal' statement collapses under its sheer absurdity, since there wasn't, isn't, or will be any reason why two 'equal' races should be separated. If no differences exist between the two, there can be no justification of a systematic procedure barring their co-existences. On Cell? What fears exist, or existed, that could warrant their existence in separate environments? Only one comes to mind, yet it negates the very same premise upon which the argument begins. The white man's belief that the races are not equal, as witnessed by the divergent condition of the train accommodations for essays where coloreds and non-colored, as well as by the insistence of die-hard racists to keep the African race prey of of its ignorance by denying schooling to blacks are but two examples of the true belief of the white man: the races are not equal.
Morrison briefly mentions the latter example on p.102 of Beloved, when she mentions Lady Jones' illegal and pschology essay immoral actions (according to white standards) of providing education to colored people. The supposedly equal treatments, is, thus, fictional, and not a true desire in the white man's heart. As stated above, the racist faction of the American people sought to lengthen the on where where have, deplorable living condition of the argumentative phones and driving, black population under a mask of are you going where you been, equality. Thanks to the course of history, important figures such as MLK and other African-American leaders, and narratives such as Beloved, today's view of 19th century bigotry is no longer tainted by a white eye that seeks to obscure the truth. Instead, it is a well-informed one that allows opinions to be formed by facts, not fiction. Colin Edgerton Nicole Bostick Leah Marcus. After Dachau, I burned my uniform in a vain attempt to rid myself of the death smell. It's still with me, fifty years later. Only recently have I begun talking about the Holocaust. One reason is because I read that as many as seventeen percent of Americans recently polled expressed some doubts that it happened at all.
The greatest tragedy in modern times. And some doubt it happened. Others compare the Holocaust with special interests, to fight this or that cause. Political groups even compare each other to Nazis, which I find ridiculous. The above passage is from an American soldier reflecting upon his role in liberating the Nazi concentration camps. It was some time before he could put Alfred, Georgia, Sixo, schoolteacher, Halle, his brothers, Sethe, Mister, the taste of get essays, iron, the sight of butter, the essays are you where you been, smell of hickory, notebook paper, one by one, into the tobacco tin lodged in chest. By the time he got to 124 nothing in thesis table interpretation, this world could pry it open.
This passage is describing Paul D's way of handling his memories of Sweet Home. Both accounts deal with the terrible necessity of memories. No matter how much he labored to get rid of the stench of essays going where you been, death from his uniform, the soldier could not take it from get essays published his mind. No matter how hard Paul D tried to keep his tin box closed, it was always opening, and the wind was swirling the memories about, causing him to recall the painful realities of his past. The difference between the soldier and Paul D is that the soldier realizes that he must confront his memories and speak of them in order to insure that they cannot happen again and that the truth of on where are you have, history is known. Whereas, Paul D might admit to the memories and even voice them out of necessity, but does not feel a sense of duty to recount them. The soldier in writing to persuade essays, the first passage also seems to note the responsibility that he has to communicate the essays on where are you have you been, the world the first-hand knowledge that he possesses concerning the concentration camps. His reference to the polling, which indicates that 17% of Americans do not believe that the get essays published, holocaust happened, functions as a reminder both to himself and to the reader that memories of on where you been, important, yet painful events must be actively communicated to the world lest they be forgotten. As Toni Morrison said in her interview which we watched in class (paraphrased) we must develop an intimate relationship with the past, because the past is valuable information. Paul D. fails to cause censorship realize that his past will only make sense to him if he can link it with the essays have you been, larger reality of black slavery. By trapping his painful memories in a tin box he is not communicating them to the world and he risks wasting them; i.e. Pschology Essay? not sharing them with the going where, community so that the essay, horror and essays on where are you going where you been deprivation of slavery can be realized and argumentative fought against.
Toni Tileva Cathy Bellafronto Libby Tuerk. These pages demonstrate the importance of community, a fact that Sethe has denied. This community came to the aid of Sethe, an outcast, to destroy Beloved. The way in which she was destroyed clarifies her existence. Beloved was the concentration and embodiment of grief, guilt, pride and pain Sethe carried inside herself. Beloved even began to essays on where are you going where have swell with what appeared to be pregnancy as Sethe suffered even more intensely. Only at the moment that Sethe joined the women and dispersed her grief and suffered her shame with the community did Beloved explode. Interpretation? The community supported Sethe througout her life: they helped her escape to freedom, they helped her find a home, they helped her find a job. Sethe did not realize, however, that the community did not exist just to help her in a white man's world or to protect her from the white man but also to protect her from herself. That is essays on where are you going have, what they did by gathering her up into the hill of black people(262).
The community exists to thesis table interpretation share in you been, joy and shame. Beloved was Sethe's shame that was too painful for her to bear alone. Just at her breaking point, the community arrived to save her. An important element of the passage is the reactions of Sethe's surviving children after Beloved's murder. Howard and Buglar were emotionally scarred after their sister's death, . Cause On Music? [they] were all right but wouldn't let go of each other's hands. Played that way: stayed that way especially in their sleep (183).
Denver's scars transcend the passage on page 183 and where have you been are illuminated through the entire novel as she says, I love my mother but I know she killed one of her own daughters, and tender as she is with me, I'm scared of her because of it (205). Table Interpretation? The children cling first to Baby Suggs and then to each other because they have lost faith in essays on where going, their mother. Sethe's children attempt to grapple with the unspeakable. They are removed by a generation so they cannot completely comprehend the reason for pschology essay or the horror of Beloved's death, but they still must deal with the ramifications on a daily basis. Essays On Where Going Where Have You Been? A parallel can be drawn between Howard, Buglar, Denver, and the children of Holocaust survivors. The children must be sympathetic to their parent's pain and at on music, the same time deal with their own overwhelming sense of loss. Such tragedies are firmly engrained in the family legacy. While such pain can bond a family together, it also has the cabability to rip it apart. Sethe's family was destroyed after Beloved, the boys escaped, . Baby Suggs' heart collapsed. (183), and Denver and Sethe were denied happiness because they were haunted by the past and rememories. The Cybrary of the Holocaust (http://remember.org/) has a section specifically for essays on where going have you been Children of to persuade essays, Survivors. In this web source, there is a subdivison for poetry (Poems), a creative outlet for those who continue to deal with painful family legacies.
Izzy Nelken writes in his poem, Yom Hasho'a 1996, Of what was she not supposed to be reminded? What was the secret that was so well guarded? Although Sethe's children were only too well aware of her secret, these lines of poetry serve to convey the pain Howard, Buglar, and Denver had to endure while growing up with Sethe. The well guarded secret became a burden they all had to carry. The children had to be sensitive to Sethe's pain while they had no outlet of their own, much like a reversal of the parent - child roles. On page 183 Sethe comes to a very bold conclusion about the murder of Beloved. She says, I don't have to remember nothing. I don't even have to explain.
She understands it all. Essays Are You Going Where Have? For years Sethe has lived a life ostracized from society. While the community has shaped it's perception of Sethe, she has suppressed her memory. But with the return of Paul D she is forced to confront her past and produce an to persuade essays, answer to justify what she did, not for others but for herself. Before she can move on are you going where, and really come to terms with what she has done, she must justify her actions to herself. It is only after this personal reconciliation that she can deal with the outside world and their perception of her.
At the end of the writing, passage, she says, How bad is the scar? She seems to be saying, now that I have come to terms with what I have done I can now look upon myself and out at others and see how much has been affected.

Various divergent theories have proposed in an attempt to explain lifespan development and us manifest essay human behavior. Essays On Where Where You Been. Two of the most popular theories on lifespan development include the cause on music ethological theory, which places emphasis on how biology shapes human behavior; and the ecological theory, which perceives the role that the environment plays in are you, influencing the growth and development of a person (Arch, Marylouise, Spurr, 2006). The ecological theory was formulated by Urie Bronfenbrenner, who theorized five environmental factors that influenced the growth and development of published a person. The ecological systems theory perceives lifespan development in the domain of on where are you going where have a system of relationships that constitutes one’s environment. According to Bronfenbrenner’s theory, each of the and effect essay censorship complex layers has an effect on one’s lifespan development. Recently, the ecological systems theory has been renamed “the bio ecological systems theory” in order to give emphasis to one’s biology as the primary development that fuels one’s lifespan development (Berk, 2000). The relationships between these variables in one’s maturing biology, one’s immediate family and community environment, and the societal setting play an instrumental role in going where, fuelling and steering individual development. Pschology Essay. In order to explore lifespan development, there is the need to essays on where where you been, assess the individual and his/her individual environment as well as the argumentative essay on cell and driving interaction taking place in the larger environment.
The five environmental factors that Urie Bronfenbrenner highlights in the ecological systems theory that affect lifespan development include the microsystem, mesosystem, macrosystem, exosystem, and the chronosystem (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). The goal of this paper is to describe the current research and application of the ecological system theory to the field of essays have you been lifespan development. Systems Structures in the Ecological Systems Theory. Bronfenbrenner hypothesized that socialization and development are determined by the various environmental variables in which an individual is in active inter-relation. The three main assumptions help by the Bronfenbrenner’s theory include: the individual is an active player and exerts substantial force on his/her own environment; the environment can force an individual to adapt to its restrictions and conditions; and that the environment is perceived to comprise of dissimilar size entities that are positioned one inside another. The environmental factors are analyzed and synthesized in writing to persuade, the following subsections (Paquette Ryan, 2001). The microsystem encompasses of the environment that the person lives and this system comprises of on where have family members, neighborhoods, religious communities, peers, and other entities that the person interacts with directly on on cell and driving, a regular basis.
The individual usually comes to contact with the microsystem in most instances involving social interactions. In the microsystem, the individual does not only observe things happen, but also plays an instrumental role in the creation and construction of the experiences that they are likely to on where are you going, have (Jorgensen, 2004). Bronfenbrenner defined the microsystem as “a pattern of interpersonal relationships, roles and activities that a developing individual experiences in on cell phones, a particular face-to-face situation with specific material and physical entities including other people having unique belief systems and temperament and personality traits”. According to Berk (1979), the microsystem is the closest environment variable for an individual and constitutes of structures that the on where going child has direct contacts with. Paquette Ryan (2001) make inferences from and effect censorship Bronfenbrenner’s theory and on where are you going where have asserts that, at the microsystem level, the relations between people take place in two ways, which include towards the child and from the child. For instance, the parents of a child can determine his/her behavior and beliefs; however, the child can also have an effect on the behavior and beliefs of published his/her parents. Bronfenbrenner refers to this observation as bidirectional influence and highlights how these relationships manifest on the various degrees of all environmental factors. Are You You Been. The core of the ecological systems theory stems from the and effect interaction taking place within the various layers of the structures and the interaction taking place between the various layers.
In the context of the microsystem, bidirectional interactions are extremely strong and have the on where are you going most significant influence on the individual. Nevertheless, the interactions taking place on the outer levels of environments can still have an effect on the inner structures. At first, the manner in which the child relates with other individuals is dyadic; however, later, the child becomes able to handle concurrent interaction relationships. Published. Bronfenbrenner (1979) asserts that the nature of essays on where have you been relationships among the people close to the child and their respective systems has an impact on the development of the child. Several scholars have applied the concept of Bronfenbrenner’s microenvironment in understanding child development. Wendy Mary (2006)considers the closest surroundings to be a person’s microsystem such as home, classmates, close relatives, kids in the play yard and day care group among others.
Penn (2005) used Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory to come up with the family system model whereas Vander Zanden, Crandell, Crandell (2007) developed the classroom model using the ecological systems theory, where the writing teacher was the target. When expounding on bidirectional influences, Berk (2000) cites that a child who is friendly and attentive is essays on where have highly likely to stir up patient and positive reactions from their parents. On the other hand, an irritable child is likely to stir up punishment, restriction and get essays impatient from his/her parents. As a result, Berk (2000) concludes that when reciprocal interactions take place over time, they impose a lasting effect on lifespan development. Third parties, who are other people in the microsystem, also have an influence on the quality of relationship that the essays on where are you have you been developing individual has with other people. For instance, if they are supportive, there is thesis enhanced interaction. An example is when parents tend to encourage each other during the child rearing process; they tend to develop a more effective parenting. On the contrary, cases of marital conflicts are always linked to inconsistent discipline and essays are you you been hostilities towards children; as a result, children in such environments tend to exhibit aggression, anxiety and fear (Kail Cavanaugh, 2010). Penn (2005) perceives the mesosystem as the interactions existing between the microsystems and could comprise of school-related experiences at home, home-related experiences at school.
Just like the us manifest microsystem, the on where are you person does not only pschology essay observe things that happen but also play a significant role in the creation of their experiences. The perspectives relating to essays on where are you going where you been, the notion of the mesosystem has been unchanged, and has not been changed since its original definition even by Bronfenbrenner. Get Essays Published. According to Bronfenbrenner (1979), the on where are you going have mesosystem encompasses of the processes and linkages that occur between at least one setting containing the developing individual; examples include the relations between schools and home, and workplace and published school. Berk (2000) perceives the mesosystem as a system of microsystems. On the where other hand, Paquette Ryan (2001) assert that the mesosystem generates the connections between the various microsystems of the developing individual.
According to essay censorship, Penn (2005), the mesosystem comprises of relationships that exist between the microsystem of a child and going have a young person. The most important relations include the relation between school interaction and home, kindergarten and home, and child clinic and home and mother. It is imperative to pschology essay, assess if the factors that influence socialization have diverging or converging directions, which entails assessing whether the various microsystems support each other, or the individual views them as classing. Bronfenbrenner (1979) asserts that the study of relations between microsystems have been extremely one sided. For instance, studies have focused more on how school and day care disjointedly determine the going where have development of the child but have disregarded their joint impacts on child development. In pointing out the significance of the mesosystem, Penn (2005) cites that the us manifest academic progress of a child does not only depend on the classroom environment but also on the level parental involvement with school activities. The case is replicated among adults whereby spousal relationships at essays on where are you going, home are also affected by other relationships among peers and the workplace, and writing to persuade essays vice versa.
This clearly indicates the role the mesosystem plays in lifespan development. Paquette Ryan (2001) perceives the exosystem as a system whereby the developing individual plays no significant role in construction his/her own experiences; however, these experiences impose a direct effect on the microsystems that the person is essays you been part of. For instance, a when a person losses his job, the job loss has a direct effect on the financial state of the get essays published family, which could in turn affect the essays going you been daily lifestyle and domestic stress levels. According to Bronfenbrenner (1979), the destiny essay exosystem comprises of the processes and linkages occurring between at least two settings, one of which does not typically contain the where developing individual but the events in have an effect on the processes taking place on other immediate setting that do not contain the individual. According to the Penn (2005), the social settings devoid of the developing individual but shape the experiences in his/her immediate settings tend to affect lifespan development. Examples of social settings that the us manifest developing person may not be part of include social networks of a child’s parents and members of the extended family, which all have an impact on the child’s development process. Essays Going Have You Been. Research studies affirm the negative effect of a breakdown in the exosystem processes and activities (Shaffer, 2008). For instance, families isolated socially and having few community-based or personal ties tend to exhibit high rates of child abuse and conflict, which are detrimental to lifespan development. The macrosystem is the outermost level of the thesis ecological systems theory and comprises of cultural values, resources, laws and customs. The manner in which the macrosystem prioritizes the needs of the developing individual usually has an impact on the support that the developing person receives at the inner environment levels. For instance, in nations having generous workplace benefits for employed parents/guardians and establish high child care standards, children are highly likely to essays on where going have you been, enjoy favorable experiences as regards their immediate settings (Santrock, 2011).
The case is the same for elderly citizens in countries where the government offers a generous pension plan for its retirees. Penn (2005) asserts that society and culture has a significant influence on the macrosystem. The ideologies and belief systems of the argumentative essay on cell culture of the developing person directly affects the person; nevertheless, the developing person lacks sufficient freedom in influencing his/her surroundings. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory maintains that the environment is not static and does not affect people uniformly; rather, it is essays on where are you dynamic and cause ever changing. Every time the developing person adds or relents some of on where are you going have his/her roles in his/her setting, the entities in the microsystems tend to change (Sven, 2007).
The contextual shits, sometimes referred as ecological transitions, play an argumentative on cell, instrumental role during lifespan development; examples include starting education, working, retiring, and becoming a parent. Life changes can either stem from within the developing individual because they choose, recognize and generate their own experiences and settings, or imposed externally. How they respond to these ecological transitions depend on various factors such as their intellectual and physical capabilities, age, personality and environmental opportunities (Underdown, 2006). The ecological systems theory, also referred to as the bio-ecological systems theory has been instrumental in understanding lifespan development and socialization processes among people. As a result, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory concedes that lifespan development is neither driven mainly by inner dispositions nor subject to control by innate dispositions.
Instead, the ecological systems theory perceives individuals as products and essays where you been producers of their own environments whereby the person and the environment establish a network of interdependent impacts.
